Clay Week with St Ives School

The Leach Pottery were pleased to host the Year 9s from St Ives School for a week of clay. The pupils encountered pottery in many forms, from hand built to thrown, raku firing to slip decoration. The group worked on a collaborative tile piece which tells the story of making at St Ives School.

1934, when David Leach visited St Ives School looking for apprentices for the Leach workshop. Bill Marshall, a boy of 14, raised his hand becoming the Leach Pottery's first apprentice. Progressing to Foreman, over the next forty two years, William Marshall was responsible for overseeing the standard ware, as well as the training of the young apprentices who passed through.
