Doug Fitch and Hannah McAndrew, two of the UK’s most popular slipware potters, return to the Leach Pottery for their first exhibition in seven years. Partners in business and in life, they live and work in Dumfries and Galloway, Scotland – sharing their love of slip decorated earthenware and historical, traditional pottery:

“Slip is a beautiful material and there are few things more glorious than a freshly slipped pot. It is an alluring process.”

Doug and Hannah draw influence from the ancient British folk heritage of country pottery, whose makers demonstrated extraordinary, intuitive skill; a high benchmark to which they aspire. Their works are both a recognition of tradition and a contemporary celebration of the craft.

The journey of the pot is important to Doug and Hannah, from the clay on the wheel and the texture of slip while decorating, to the challenges of the wood-fuelled kiln. For them, clay and slipware is their unwavering obsession that brought them together and continues to shape their lives:

“It is our life, our driving force, the very thing we think of from the moment we wake, and it is on our minds as we fall sleep. We are potters, but it isn’t our job, it is our very being.”

Doug and Hannah’s pots are exhibited across the UK and can be found in numerous public and private collections in England, America and Japan.

The exhibition runs in the Leach Pottery Entrance Gallery.
