See how Niek has been busy exploring his beloved slipware, including creating a more textured and tasty red clay body decorated with white slip alongside striking motifs and clay applications. When not working in Bernard Leach’s studio, Niek could often be found in the local countryside and museums seeking inspiration for this new body of work.

Niek’s international residency explores the intersection of functional and ornamental pots, layering these ideas in the slipware work he makes:

“Slipware ceramics have a tradition of passing on, telling stories, embellishing everyday life and celebrating and commemorating occasions. They are steeped in tradition and have many local variations and interpretations.

Traditions are important for passing on cultural heritage, but they can also narrow the view. To keep traditions alive, they must be able to open up to outside influences.”

The exhibition runs in the Leach Pottery Shop.
