Richard Heeley’s hand-thrown vessels, influenced by East Asian traditions, explore the expressive possibilities of brushwork on both wood-fired Shino stoneware and blue and white porcelain. Working from Hempmill Pottery and Cookery School on the Shropshire–Staffordshire border, he sources local clay, timber, and glaze materials, crafting his tools and firing with wood from the surrounding wetlands and woods. His work is a quiet dialogue with the landscape—shaped by childhood memories and grounded in a life lived closely with the land.
“My work is born of place,” Richard writes. “It is shaped by the natural properties of clay, water, wood, and fire—and by a desire to stay connected to the boy who once played in the woods with mud and a stick. The work reflects where I live, and where I live is integral to the work I love to make.”
