Specialist Skills Course: 5 Day Specialist Intermediate Throwing and Surface decoration course

During the building project aspects of the Adult Learning programme will take place at the Newlyn School of Art. Courses will continue to offer supportive teaching sensitive to the Leach ethos in the beautiful equipped studio at Newlyn School of Art.

Once more is known about the building requirements, we hope to release additional course dates taking place at the Leach Pottery alongside our programme at Newlyn School of Art.

This is a 5 day practice-based throwing and surface decoration course aimed at those with intermediate throwing experience.

Where: Newlyn School of Art
Places: 4 per course
Duration: 5 days, 10:00am - 4pm daily, apart from the last day which will finish at 3.30pm.
Equipment & materials: clay and a basic tool kit is provided: we focus on building core skills and working directly with the clay to get the most from a central selection of tools. Please bring additional tools if you wish to use them along with an apron and hand towel.

This course will: teach you specific skills in throwing and surface decoration methods
You will leave with: one or two final pieces, your chosen piece/s need to be within the footprint of 20 x 20 x 20cm  (if you opt for one final piece you can choose to fire and glaze up to 5 test tiles) sent to you* up to 12 weeks after the course has finished.
Level: intermediate - to do this course, you will need to be able to centre at least 2 Kg with clay, produce cylinders, and be able to achieve the forms that you aim for

Overview

The course covers:

- clay preparation: wedging techniques and centering clay of up to 2kg on the wheel

- throwing repeat forms with self-led exploration

- practicing your preferred form, throwing to specific measurements and repeat throwing

- decorative methods such as how to make a decorative slip with oxides, slip trailing, slip brush decoration, fluting, sgraffito and stamp making. (This course doesn’t cover glaze decoration, making or application).

The workshop includes an introductory assessment of needs, plus one-to-one tuition with one of our professional potters.
