Amy Wilson, Apprentice Potter: Leach Studio: A Potter’s Challenge

Selected Object: Bernard Leach Bottle-Vase, Cut-sided, date unknown.

“I was drawn to this bottle-vase with its soft curves and hard edges. It gave me a lot of ideas; there are many shapes hidden within the whole: not just vase forms, but cups, jars and bowls.

As a first-year Apprentice, I wanted to explore something I had not done much, and by choosing this cut-sided vase I could focus on faceting on curved surfaces, which was new to me and posed an exciting challenge. Most of my pots, like Bernard’s bottle vase, were thrown thick and faceted later when leather-hard, although some of them were faceted wet and then bellied-out while still on the wheel.

Inspired by the original, I chose our Studio tenmoku for most of the glazing in combination with a celadon liner glaze. I also glazed a couple of pieces in a shino that breaks nicely to show off the facets.”

All Amy’s pots were SOLD OUT during the Entrance Gallery Exhibition.
